Our gums are produced with gum arabic, a gelling agent from the acacia tree from Ethiopia and the Mediterranean region. From time to time, the bark of this tree naturally erupts, the wound created by this is closed by the gum. This can then be cut off and be used in different sectors. In the past, almost all sweets were made with gum arabic, but in the last decade many manufacturers have switched to the much cheaper gelatin which has the same applications, but is of less quality than the gum arabic. However, we remain true to the authentic recipes and use gum arabic in our artisanal production for our sweets. By using this gum, most of our sweets are therefore 100% vegetable.
With the opening of the first store in Ghent in 1904, production in the cellars under the store expanded with an assortment of traditional confectionery. Today we still use the same recipes for our delicious artisanal “from grandmother’s time” sweets.
